- Post-Doc Research Fellow or Researcher B' - Earth Observation Specialist for Marine Applications
The tasks include conducting scientific research projects concerning Earth Observation (EO) (passive and active sensors), in conjunction with Geoinformation. This research is specifically focused on maritime applications within the scope of national and EU-funded projects. As a specialist in remote sensing, the successful candidate will be at the forefront of EO technology for maritime applications. The primary responsibility of the successful candidate will be to analyze EO marine data from, e.g., the Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellite constellations to monitor maritime activities, including ship traffic, oil spills, and environmental changes. The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with maritime authorities and stakeholders to address specific requirements in the context of application development. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to maritime safety, security, and environmental protection through the utilization of advanced remote sensing technology.Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be placed in the Resilient Society Department of ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence, and is expected to contribute towards shaping and advancing its research and innovation agenda by:
1. Conducting high-quality research by utilizing Earth Observation (EO) active and/or passive satellite sensors from the Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellite constellation to monitor maritime activities, including vessel traffic, illegal fishing, and pollution incidents;
2. Analyzing Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery to detect and track vessels, identify potential threats, and assess environmental conditions such as oil spills;
3. Analyzing Optical satellite imagery to detect human and natural activities;
4. Developing and implementing algorithms and techniques for EO data processing, image interpretation, and feature extraction; The focus is on Near Real-Time NRT applications using ECoE's Ground Receiving Station DAS;
5. Demonstrating the ability to conduct and publish high-quality research;
6. Conducting research and development to enhance maritime surveillance capabilities, including the integration of complementary data sources and advanced analytics;
7. Staying informed about advancements in passive and active EO technology, image processing techniques, and NRT remote sensing applications relevant to maritime domain awareness;
8. Providing technical expertise and support to internal and external stakeholders, including training and capacity-building activities;
9. Collaborating with maritime authorities and other stakeholders to provide actionable intelligence and support maritime surveillance and response efforts;
10. Acquiring, managing, and/or coordinating funded projects;
11. Contributing to the documentation and dissemination of findings, including scientific project proposals, reports, result presentations, and scientific publications;
12. Travelling in order to present research findings at scientific conferences or to serve research projects/activities of the Marine Security & Safety cluster;
13. Any other relevant duties deemed useful and necessary.Qualifications
1. PhD degree in Engineering; or Physics; or Mathematics; or Earth Observation; Computer Science or Remote Sensing or similar field;
2. Strong background in one or more of: SAR/optical remote sensing for maritime applications, using and analyzing active and/or passive satellite data and remote sensing technology and applications;
3. Proficiency in EO data processing software (e.g., ESA SNAP, SARscape) and GIS tools will be considered as an advantage;
4. Strong computational and data analysis skills using relevant programming languages or platforms (e.g., Python, C++)will be considered as an advantage;
5. Knowledge of artificial intelligence and machine learning will be considered as an advantage;
6. Knowledge of earth observation, ideally with active (e.g., SAR) and/or passive satellite sensors (e.g., Hyperspectral / multispectral data), will be considered as an advantage;
7. Experience and knowledge in processing and linking large amounts of data;
8. Effective communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to diverse audiences;
9. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment;
10. Experience in maritime surveillance or environmental monitoring is desirable but optional;
11. Experience in the preparation of scientific project proposals is considered an advantage;
12. Proven experience in documenting and presenting scientific results in articles and presentations is considered an advantage;
13. Excellent command of English is mandatory while knowledge of Greek or any other relevant language necessary for the position is considered an advantage;
14. Strong organizational skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.Minimum Requirements for the Post-Doctoral Research Fellow or Researcher B'
